The Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management (IAFSM) will be hosting a one-day virtual workshop on HEC-RAS 2D modeling with Pipe Networks. This hands-on workshop will provide an overview of upcoming HEC-RAS capabilities including 2D hydraulic modeling with integrated urban stormwater features. The addition of RAS Pipe Networks allows users to analyze urban storm sewer systems in conjunction with surface areas to better characterize pluvial flooding and interior drainage. This will be a low-cost introductory workshop for both consultants and government officials!
The workshop will be conducted by Chris Hanstad, PE, CFM, Senior Hydraulic Engineer. Chris leads large-scale FEMA floodplain studies in Illinois and is an expert in HEC-RAS 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling.
Event Details:
- Dates: Thursday, August, 28th, 2025
- Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Number of CEC/s/PDH's: TBD
- Registration Fees: $75 (Student/Public Sector); $100 (Private Sector)
- Registration Link: HEC-RAS 2D + Pipes Workshop Registration
Overview:
This hands-on workshop will provide an introductory course on using HEC-RAS 2D hydraulic modeling with integrated urban stormwater features. The addition of pipe networks allows users to analyze urban storm sewer systems in conjunction with surface areas to better characterize pluvial and urban flooding. A computer with HEC-RAS version 6.7 Beta 4 installed will be required. Two monitors are highly recommended to simultaneously watch and interactively follow along with workshop examples.
Workshop Objectives:
This workshop aims to equip participants with the skills needed to effectively use HEC-RAS for 2D hydraulic modeling with the introduction pipe networks.
Attendees will:
- Learn the differences between 1D and 2D modeling and become familiar with the new features introduced in HEC-RAS.
- Gain hands-on experience through practical exercises and real-world examples.
- Understand the use of RAS Mapper and preprocessing techniques.
- Receive hands-on training in creating and analyzing 2D models, including creation of simple pipe networks.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is intended for consulting engineers, water resource planners, and engineers employed by local, state, or federal government agencies. Participants should have experience in floodplain hydrology and hydraulics, as well as some familiarity with HEC-RAS.
Spaces are limited, so register today to secure your spot!
If the course is full please email Amanda King at iafsm@illinoisfloods.org to be added to a waitlist.
