Water Resource Engineer I | McHenry County - Dept. of Planning & Development

Under general supervision, the Water Resource Engineer I participates in the county’s water resources programs with an emphasis on using his/her engineering expertise to efficiently and accurately process applications, enforce ordinances, maintain records, and provide courteous customer service. The Water Resource Engineer I may assist the Water Resources Manager with development and implementation of county water resources related programs, policies, and regulations.

As the Water Resource Engineer I, you may perform the following tasks:

  • Demonstrate compliance with McHenry County’s organization values (Respect, Accountability, and Integrity) at all times.
  • Processes and reviews simple to moderately complex permit and subdivision applications for compliance with county, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintains accurate permit records and provides courteous customer service.
  • Provides technical assistance and expertise regarding subdivision or stormwater management to assist the general public in person or by telephone in order to respond to inquiries, receive complaints, and resolve problems.
  • Inspects and documents soil erosion, sediment control, grading and stabilization of construction sites. Ensures that projects are completed in accordance with approved plans and applicable county, state, and federal regulations.
  • Coordinates with other governmental agencies to receive the requisite approval to issue County permits.
  • Assists with the enforcement of the Stormwater Management Ordinance by documenting and verifying ordinance violations.
  • Assists with special projects, including, but not limited to: the National Flood Insurance Program and Community Rating System.
  • Attends the Technical Advisory Committee, Stormwater Management Commission, and Water Resource Division Meetings.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field and one to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Engineer In Training (EIT) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment; Illinois Professional Engineer’s (PE) License preferred. 
  • Certified Floodplain Manager or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment. 
  • Certified Professional In Erosion and Sediment Control or similar credentials preferred. 
  • Certified Wetland Specialist or similar credentials preferred.
  • Unrestricted Automobile Driver’s License.


Base pay: $54,995/year

Medical, Dental, Vision, Accident and Life Insurance, IMRF Pension Plan, Deferred Compensation Plan, Paid Vacation, Holidays, Personal and Sick Days.
